Mtd Serial Number Decoder
The MTD numbering system is based on a 6 digit number. Private label or Customer model numbers are 9 digits. The last three numbers (Customer designation) indicate that something is different from the basic MTD number designated by the first 6 digits. The difference may be only the color or it may have different wheels, handles, shrouds, etc.
Help your Lawn Breathe
Just as the 'thatch' creates a smothering blanket over the lawn, high-clay soil suffocates the roots of the turf as it compacts over time. Many lawn professionals suggest you 'aerate' once a season. Aeration with a 'plug-type' machine removes little plugs of soil and allows water, air and nutrients down to the roots. For aeration, only a good plug type machine works well. Common 'spike-type' aerators punch holes in the ground but further compact the soil around the hole reducing their effectiveness. Plug-aeration takes a specialized tool that can be purchased, rented or hired as a service from a good lawn maintenance company.

If your Yard-Man mower, made by MTD Products, ever needs replacement parts, you will need to know the mower’s model number and serial number so you can obtain an exact match for the bad part. The stick-on identification labels bearing the model number and serial number are on areas of the mower that are unlikely to need replacement even after years of use.
Label Locations
The model-number label location varies by mower type. The label is a 2-inch-by-3-inch rectangular label with the model number printed in a box to the left of the serial number, which also is in a box. Below the numbers is the manufacturer’s address and contact phone number. The label on walk-behind, side-discharge mowers normally is on top of the deck behind or in front of the engine. The label on rear-discharge, bag-type, walk-behind mowers is normally on the door covering the rear-discharge opening. The label on riding mowers is underneath the seat.
Reading Label
The serial number is an 11-character number. The characters may be numerals, letters or dashes. The first two characters are always numerals and identify the type of mower. The model numbers for walk-behind push mowers start with 11, while those for self-propelled walk-behind mowers start with 12. Riding mowers designated as lawn tractors have model numbers that start with 13 while the numbers for riding models designated as garden tractors start with 14.
